If more material has been lost from a tooth, for example due to a large cavity or a larger piece
breaking off, an onlay is an attractive option for restoring the function and aesthetics of a tooth.
The advantage of an onlay in contrast to a full crown is that much less hard tooth tissue has to be
ground off. A defect-oriented preparation is then applied. Onlays can be made completely of ceramic
for a highly aesthetic finish or also from precious metal.
